Why use additional authentication methods beyond an on-screen signature?
An electronic signature allows a person to sign a document digitally, offering an efficient and secure alternative to a handwritten signature. For an electronic signature to be legally valid, it must meet certain requirements that ensure its authenticity and integrity. These general requirements include the ability to identify the signer and ensure that the document's content has not been altered after it has been signed.
However, in some cases, the simple application of an electronic signature may not be sufficient to meet security standards or legal regulations in certain sectors or countries. For this reason, it is recommended to enhance the authentication methods for the signer. These additional methods, such as OTP (One-Time Password) authentication sent via email or WhatsApp, facial recognition, or verification through a copy of an identity document, add an extra layer of security.
The implementation of these methods ensures that the person signing is indeed who they claim to be, which reduces the risk of fraud and provides greater confidence in the legal validity of electronically signed documents.
OTP Authentication Methods via WhatsApp
During the electronic signature process, a unique code is sent to the signer via WhatsApp. This code must be entered into the platform before completing the document signature. For security reasons, the OTP code expires within 2 hours, ensuring that the signer is present and active during that time. If the code expires, the signer will need to request a new code to proceed with the signing process.
How to activate this method for each signer?
When creating the document via ZapSign's web platform, in the "Signers" stage, select the "WhatsApp Code" option. It is recommended to enter the mobile number of the person who will sign the document and click the lock icon so that the person cannot modify this number during the signing process.
What are the benefits of this method?
OTP authentication adds an additional layer of security to the signature process. It not only guarantees that the person signing is who they claim to be but also validates the phone number used. Additionally, since the code is sent via WhatsApp instead of text message (SMS), the deliverability to the signer is higher, ensuring they can complete the document signature.

OTP authentication via WhatsApp is available for all countries and paid plans. Each code sent costs $0.10 USD, and to use this method, credits must be purchased in the ZapSign account by going to Settings > Plans and Pricing > Credits.
